You hear both, but I would lean toward (lean toward meaning”favor”) myself.
I want to be myself.
Or “Don’t try to be anyone you’re not, just be yourself.”
But you also hear it without the “self”. For example:
-I wish I could be him, he has it all.
-Just be you, man. Be proud of who you are.
