Is it because wind is a naturally occurring phenomena, and as such is not considered as an actor which opened the window? As such, あく is used instead?

「あけて」（開ける）は他動詞で、人が意図的に開けることを言います。
「あいて」（開く）は自動詞で、人や動物が関わらずに開くことを言います。
今回は、窓が開いた原因が風なので、「開く」を使います。
