"Amerikka" means USA and "amerikkalainen" means American. You can say too "yhdysvaltalainen", which means American.

Usually, if not otherwise specified, Amerikka refers to USA. Similarly, if not otherwise specified, amerikkalainen means a person from the USA.
Usually, if we were to talk about Canada, for example, we'd just say Canada. If we were talking about South-America, then we'd specify that we're talking about South-America (Etelä-Amerikka) and not just say Amerikka.
