When you can't see the person the expression doesn't fit, because it is impossible to see a reaction over the phone(as we know).
You could say somethin like this though!

As far as idioms, if someone gets angry and you can actually see the anger appear on their face, or can visibly see their transition of mood(mostly in their eyes) you can say "His(or her) eyes lit up when he heard that." Or just plain "His eyes lit up."
