です As far as I know is not considered a verb. です is the "formal ending" for nouns and adjetives.
あかいです
くるまです
います is the verb "to be" for living beings. あります is for non-living things.
ひとがいます
くるまがあります
ねこはどこにいますか : where is the cat?
