Question about German

What does etwas auf den Grund gehen mean.

Is it the equivalent of the English expression to get to the bottom of something.

Do German folk also use it pretty much in the same manner like we American folk.

We commonly use to get to the bottom of something meaning to find the true cause or explanation of a bad situation.

Feel free to provide some examples if you want thanks again beforehand.
