Yes, there's indeed a censorship here, which would censor most of websites and apps outside of China.
The party, CCP, which gov China did so for complicated reasons. One of these is that they want to stabilize their governance in China since decades ago in about 1980, the leader during that time made many unforgivable mistakes, which is flagrant violation of civil rights. The leader these days wanted to hide it.
Other than that, They want the society to be stable and center on economical developmemt instead of political controversy.
Anyway, they indeed help most of Chinese people live in good life, But it is also undeniable that they neglect human rights.

@Krimball And don't trust those description that make CCP out to be evil government and etc, they have deep bias against Chinese gov.
They did bad things to protect most of people's interest, which means they will be mean to violate rights of the minorities. This is unforgivable for sure, but you know, it's way far away from those evil-esque description like intend to bully people.
They did this cuz they have yet to find a way to settle the problem correctly and properly. They have very limit idea about what ve been achieved with respect to humen rights in western countries. It's like ignorant parents educating their kids, They want them to grow better, but they have no idea about how would they correctly do that. So they confiscate thier comic books phones and so forth.. Such an analogy is not definite, but it really helps to understand..
