I copy and paste what the italian grammar says:
I cosiddetti verbi servili (in particolare i più comuni dovere, potere e volere) usati da soli richiedono l'ausiliare avere, quando invece accompagnano l'infinito di un altro verbo possono assumerne l'ausiliare essere (sono dovuto andare): nell'uso attuale si osserva una certa diffusione di avere in modo indifferenziato, quindi sono dovuto andare e anche ho dovuto andare. Inoltre:
- si usa avere quando i servili sono seguiti dal verbo essere o da un infinito passivo (non ho potuto essere presente, non ha voluto essere rieletto);
- se l'ausiliare richiesto è essere, in presenza di un pronome atono che preceda l'ausiliare si mantiene essere (non ci sono voluti andare), con pronome che segua l'infinito è usato avere (non hanno potuto andarci);

No la frase giusta è "le cose avrebbero potuto essere diverse"
La scelta del verbo ausiliare per i tempi composti del verbo servile seguito dall'infinito essere è semplice: si deve usare avere. Dunque, avrebbero potuto essere.
Se vi fosse anche la presenza di un pronome personale o riflessivo atono (mi, ti, gli/le, ci, vi, si) o di particelle atone come ci/vi (locative, presentative, fraseologiche), la situazione, almeno in parte, cambierebbe: si userebbe l'ausiliare essere in caso di anticipazione del pronome (gli sarebbe potuto essere utile; ci saremmo dovuti essere tutti), avere in caso di posticipazione del pronome (avrebbe potuto essergli utile; avremmo dovuto esserci tutti).
