"A little while back" sounds like it happened longer ago than "a little while ago," I think. However, I also think this 'boundary' between the two would really rely on context.
E.g.
A: Woah, your tank of gas is full! I thought it would be empty; it was almost there last night.
B: Yeah, I just filled it up a little while ago.
A: When did you get this car anyway?
B: A little while back. I bought it in July as a birthday present to myself.
This nuance might vary from person to person, though.
