The simple answer: Prawns are larger than shrimp.
The complicated answer: These two words are often used interchangeably. Either word could be used to describe any small crustacean that looks like either a shrimp or a prawn. However, in America the word "shrimp" is used more commonly than "prawn". And in the UK and Australia the word "prawn" is used more commonly than "shrimp".
