Canes are made of rattan, or light woods, they're for punishing children by hitting them.
"Had the pleasure of knowing intimately": this is sarcasm, it is not pleasurable to be hit by a cane. The author has been spanked with one in his childhood, thus "knowing intimately" is a euphemism (expression) for being caned often (thus being "intimate" or having a "close relationship" with the cane after being hit with it so often - this is personification (writing technique), making objects sound humanlike).
