Why is that nearly half of the Americans don't vote in elections? Surely everyone knows that there's an election going on and their votes are needed.

Voting here is different. Here, the person who gets the most votes does not win the election, also called the "popular vote". So I think this really discourages some people from voting, it does for me.

Since there’s only two major parties a decent number of people feel discouraged because it feels like you’re not actually voting for someone you’re passionate about. We call it “voting for the lesser of two evils.”

To add on to the previous answer some people aren’t interested in politics. However, this year many Americans came out to vote, one of the highest turnouts in American history.
