kamu is a polite way,
for those that are closed to you, you can use (kau) but definitely not a polite way for strangers
you = kamu/ awak/ kau/ engkau
but of course it depends on to whom you are talking with.

"Kamu" does give away a polite vibe when talking to stranger, but "kamu" is also widely use when a boss/employer/superior is addressing to their worker or subordinate-level kind of person. So it is a bit strange when using towards a stranger.
Even for a stranger we oftenly use "awak". It's more common this way. Though of course, both "awak" and "kamu" can only be used against someone the same age as you or lower, definitely not older
