For someone to pay for their own things or life:
“John grew up, got a job and began to pay his own way. He didn’t need his parents to pay for him anymore.”
It could also be even more literal and mean a person can pay his own way with cash, credit card or his phone. Say there are three friends who decide to buy something very expensive and pay three ways:
Person A - “You shouldn’t use cash!”
Person B - “He can pay his own way! It doesn’t matter as long as he pays his share of the money”.
Person C - “Yeah! What does it matter? I had some cash in my wallet.”
Person A - “True. True. Ok!”
