Question about English (US)

In my high school days, I did not touch computers.
Why? Because my mother had thrown away my computer!
For her, I was too fanatic.

Anyway, I wanted to learn computers more, so I entered the computer science department.
The department, however, did not teach students how to do programming.
What I learned was the science behind computers.

So I needed to study programming myself, and it took years long.
Now that I've been working for 20 years as a software engineer,
I can think of myself as an expert in programming.
Does this sound natural?
