I was being so confused because someone said i was supposed to say “sad. I dropped my food on the floor today.” when i said “sad. I let my food drop on the floor today”

It depends on the context.
If you let something drop, it means it was dropping and you didn't stop it
If you drop something. it means you caused it to drop

@curlicious oh i see! So “let something drop” is an action/move of something that i didn’t stop(because i LET it drop), and “drop something” is a result?

You could also say "let it drop" = "allowed it to drop"

It is slightly unnatural, although I think it is possible to say it.
Although they mean the same thing, "let it drop" is the passive version of the action (accidental action), while "allowed it to drop" is a more active version of the action (intentional action). I'm not too sure if this explanation is correct, so I will use an example:
>"I nearly jumped over the wall" = I tried to jump over the wall, but I was unable to do it (This sentence is natural)
>"I nearly allowed him to drop upon the floor" = I tried to allow him to drop upon the floor, but I was unable to do it (This sentence is less natural)
