Question about United States

Hi, would you say people nowadays rarely write letters/emails not for the work just for communication?

Also, is it a pattern that people start with things like "I hope this letter finds you well"?(As for this, is it a real thing or would you consider it as a social etiquette or some greeting exchange that cannot mean much in its literal meaning? I guess here I'm just wondering how a native speaker feels about it as "how are you" in daily life, as I checked last time, barely means "how are you")
