When you want to express the fact that you live in a certain place, they basically mean the same. If you want to give a specific address, "abitare" is better (since it's more specific).
On the other hand, "vivere" can also mean the act of living as a being (aka. not being dead), whereas "abitare" doesn't have this meaning.
- "Vivo a Milano / Abito a Milano" --> I live in Milan
- "Abito in via Roma" --> I live on Rome St.
- "Vivo per la scienza" --> I live for science

A volte si equivalgono;
-- vivere: tutto quello che accade ad una persona;
-- abitare: stare in un luogo, in una casa; si puo` abitare anche dopo la morte (al cimitero);
Esempio. vivi a Roma ? (simile a: abiti a Roma)
