Basically, 'compensate for' means to give something of value (usually money) to someone in order to make up for something that was lost or damaged.
Also, that sentence seems fine, but I think if you moved the 'her' to after compensate, so it's 'She made him compensate her for leaving.' would be more grammatically correct.
