Question about Japanese

I was reading my practice book and I found this phrase "お父さんのすすめで日本語の勉強を始めました。" The すすめ comes from 進む? What exactly does すすめで means? And why does it have to be used で? Could it be すすめに instead of すすめで?
Thank you!
