Mi papá es de Puerto Rico y me he criado en Estados Unidos, y me ha dicho que "hablamos castellano, no español", entiendo por qué pero ¿piensan de forma diferente ustedes?

@redpearbook No soy hablante nativa, pero entiendo lo que quiere decir tu papá más o menos. En mi opinión (limitada), yo creo que la palabra “castellano” se usa para distinguir entre regiones y países diferentes. Según lo que tengo entendido, es algo cultural / regional más que diferencias en el idioma mismo (aunque sí existen algunas). Pero como he dicho, no soy hispana así que es posible que no comprenda la idea en su totalidad.

Estoy en desacuerdo con las opiniones previas y también con tu padre.
Castellano y español son sinónimos, así que en Puerto Rico hablan español/castellano, de hecho la RAE recomienda "español" porque "castellano", también puede ser el español hablado en Castilla o el dialecto de latín vulgar que se habló ahí.
Es común escuchar gente diciendo, "que no hablamos español, hablamos castellano" "que no hablamos castellano, hablamos español" y dando sus razones, esto a dado paso a que en ocasiones distingamos los términos: castellano (España) Español (América) y viceversa.
