Question about Korea, Republic Of
In korean funerals, men wear striped armbands, that vary according to one's relation to the deceased. I want to know the criterion for armbands without stripes, who wears it on the funeral. I know that grandchildren are supposed to wear it often but I have seen others (not grandchildren) wearing it too.

It's called 'Sangju(상주)'. usually, the eldest son(장남) or Grandson(장손) wears an armband with two Black rows. They have to wear black ribbons on their chests in addition to armbands. and son-in-law(사위) and other close relatives(직계친척-4촌이내) wear an armband with a single black row. In the case of grand grandfather relatives(8촌이내), they usually wear an armband with no lines.

@DannyJoung but I watched a movie where a guy died leaving behind only his younger brother and mother without ANY RELATIVES, and at his funeral, his brother wears an armband with no stripes at all, even though he is eligible to be the chief mourner. so is there a reason why the guy wore that armband?

When Sangju is not married, he/she wears the armband without a row. If his little brother was married, he would probably wear an armband with a row. got that?
두줄 - 아들, 장손, 사위* (*아들, 장손이 모두 없는경우.)
한줄 - 사위, 기혼자 친족
줄없음 - 미혼자, 손자, 부계 8촌이내 친척. 모계는 4촌.
