Una trinchera es una fosa, pero una fosa no tiene por qué ser siempre una trinchera. A la fosa se le puede dar más usos, además del bélico. Por ejemplo, una fosa profunda para extraer gas, fosas cavadas para hacer pozos, fosa destinada a enterrar un cadáver, etc.
La trinchera es la fosa usada únicamente para protegerse en el campo de batalla.
