They mean the same, but garner is like to earn something through effort, or to gather things to form a storage. But you can use either one of them.
Examples:
I gathered fruits. = I garnered fruits.
I gathered a standing ovation ≠ I garnered a standing ovation = I earned a standing ovation.
I gathered books. = I garnered books. (to form a storage)
I gathered 4 dollars. (maybe you just picked them?) = I garnered 4 dollars. (you sold something to earn that 4 dollars) = I earned 4 dollars.
That's what I think :')

Gather can be used more commonly than garner. You can gather flowers, books, information, or support for a cause.
"He gathered votes for his political cause."
"We gathered flowers in the fields today."
"Let's gather all of the clothes so we can wash them."
You can gather all sorts of things!
Garner, meanwhile, is usually only used for support or information.
"She spent hours garnering information for her research paper."
"They garnered support for their campaign."
Garner isn't usually used for physical objects, like flowers or books.
