They both sound fine to me in the example sentence. One difference I can think of is when you're talking about something specifically at the side of a river. So you can say,
"I was sitting alongside the river", but not "I was sitting along the river".
"The tree is alongside the river", but not "the tree is along the river".
However, "There are trees along the river" and "There are trees alongside the river" are both correct.
I think along has more of a stretched out, general feeling to it, like you are biking down the length of the river, while alongside is a little more like focusing more on the location where you were cycling, location being beside of the river.
