What would you recommend someone do to learn Japanese? For anyone that is a native english speaker, but knows Japanese, how did you learn? Do you need Hiragana and Katakana?

My English teacher, who is fluent in Japanese, said he first learned Japanese through comics and animes.
He now learns Japanese mostly by watching dramas.
Seeing those who are learning Japanese and asking questions on this site, knowing Hiragana and Katakana seems useful.
