"Des" is Genitiv. This cause is often not correctly used by german speakers, they always use Dativ instead of Genitiv.
For example:
Wegen des Geldes. (Genitiv, Correct)
Wegen dem Geld. (Dativ, wrong)

@Alicia_G is right. There is a saying called: "Der Dativ ist dem Genitiv sein Tod." It addresses exactly that 'problem'. (Grammatically correct it should of course be: "Der Dativ ist des Genitivs Tod." but it's more fun when the saying uses Dativ ;) )

Man könnte statt "wegen" auch "Aufgrund" oder so sagen. Es ist immer ein Grund warum etwas passiert.
