You studying to +V or V~ing...
~ 하는 것 and ~ 하기 is almost same.
But actually, it has some differences.
However, it is difficult to explain.
I have some tips.
When you want to emphasize the action, ~ 하는 것 compare with ~ 하기
For example,
Today plan
등산 하기
In this case 등산하는 것 is weird.
I think it might be difficult for foreigners to distinguish.
