これ is what is within your reach, それ is in the middle between you and the other person, and あれ is beyond the reach of both you and the other person.
P.S. Can you help me with this? https://hinative.com/ja/questions/19558660

Basically:
これ for things close to the speaker
それ for things close to the hearer
あれ for things far from both
And things close to both of them are interpreted as those close the speaker and referred to using これ.
