Air conditioning is the system by which a building keeps its air cool.
Air conditioner - not heard this used before, but I would assume it meant a single air conditioning unit. An object that cools down the room, as opposed to âair conditioningâ which is a general term for a buildingâs cooling system.

@Garry_Hall I think that "conditioner" is used in US native English speaker? Because I have seen "air conditioner" in my textbook.....
- English (UK)
@gaoyuyan I live in the UK and have always called it âair conditioningâ even if referring to a single thing.
âThis building has air conditioningâ
âTurn on the air conditioningâ
I suppose an âair conditionerâ would be something like this:

But we donât really use them very much in the UK because it doesnât get hot very often!

@Garry_Hall Many people have explanations for me. They say "air conditioner" is a noun, and "air conditioning" is a verb. But I don't think "air conditioning" is a verb because we usually use -ing for nouns. So I am confused.
- English (UK)
@gaoyuyan they are kind of correct. We use âingâ for VERBs normally
Walking, playing, eating, etc
But in this case, we use it as a noun.
Itâs a bit like the difference between âwaterâ (air conditioning) and âa glass of waterâ (air conditioner). For a glass of water, you could also just say âwaterâ, and it would be fine.
