Question about English (UK)

What is the difference between my mother and mother of mine ?Feel free to just provide example sentences.

I watch the TV series "Doctor who" and the characters often say "mother/sister/etc of mine", and not "my mother". is there any difference? or is it just a more outdated expression, because I don't hear such a formulation anywhere else now?
