Ataúd es donde se pone el cuerpo de un difunto en inglés es Coffin, fosa es el hueco donde se pone el ataúd del difunto, en inglés es Pit. Y la tumba es la cavidad en la tierra cuando el ataúd de una persona ya está allí en la fosa en inglés es grave o tomb.
Ejemplos:
Tumba: las tumbas más antiguas son en Egipto.
Ataúd: el ataúd se lleva desde la funeraria hasta el cementerio.
Fosa: en las fosas comunes entierran cadáveres que no tienen sepultura propia.

Is there a lighter way of saying coffin than ataúd, I know in English the word “casket” is lighter and less harsh than “coffin”

@Kyndal_Bush yes, but is only used with close friends or in a very casual environment. Ataúd is very neutral not very harsh nor light
