ご依頼 has "ご" in it, which is an honorific expression. リクエスト is the Japanese form of the English word "request", but it is used more casually in Japanese than the original, like a disk jockey saying, "Request from Mori Yuji in Gifu City. _Hey, Jude_ by the Beatles".

@dorami-09 I know about ご, but you didn't answer my question. Is there any difference in nuance between the meaning of 依頼 and リクエスト?
- Japanese
@Shadow5YA 依頼 is a mixture of the words "order" and "ask" in English. リクエスト comes from the English word for "request" but has a lighter meaning. When I was studying English, I wondered why my interlocutor looked uncomfortable when I used "request." Later I learned that the word has a more powerful connotation in English.

@dorami-09 I'm still not clear of the meaning of 依頼 then. Are you saying it has the same connotation as the English request?
- Japanese
@Shadow5YA No. It sounds very formal but リクエスト is a casual phrase in Japanese.

@dorami-09 I know, I was comparing 依頼 to the English meaning of request. Is that correct?
Or is the English meaning of request still more serious than making a ご依頼?

@Shadow5YA ご依頼 is a polite and modest expression. In English, there is the answer "Certainly". I think the politeness of ご依頼 is similar to that. The English word "request" sometimes sounds rather arrogant, as if to say that you will not tolerate disobedience. The Japanese word "リクエスト", on the other hand, is used very casually in everyday Japanese conversation.

@dorami-09 As a native speaker, I don't think the word "request" is as serious as what you were taught. I think it's closer to the Japanese 頼み.
The English word you are thinking of where you can't tolerate disobedience is "order".
Going back to 依頼, is it more serious than a 頼み?

@Shadow5YA I was surprised to find that the English word "request" sounded more serious than the Japanese term リクエスト.
There are two systems of Japanese phrase: "漢語", which originates from Chinese, and "和語", which was born in Japan. For example, "腹痛" is a 漢語 and "おなかがいたい" is a 和語. 漢語 words tend to be more formal than 和語 words and have a slightly more serious air.

@dorami-09 It can be, but it depends on the context. If you are using the word "request" in while working in an IT company for example, then yes it is serious since it is related to work.
But if you are using request between friends, then naturally it's not that serious.

@Shadow5YA When someone politely answers your question in your native language, you would at least say "thank you". Right?

@dorami-09 My question isn't completely answered yet, but thank you for all of your replies.
However, please keep in mind that this is a message board, not a phone call. It is not polite to expect the other person to have to immediately reply without consideration or knowledge of their circumstances elsewhere.
When I post, I do so without expecting anyone to reply back at all. You should not ask unrelated questions as if it's a trade. If someone wants to reply, they will reply whenever they can. I do not need to be the person to answer all of your questions either.
