Question about English (US)
"Can I ask you to ...?"
Is this phrase commonly used? If so, who would you use this to? Someone close to you, like friends or family members? Or can you use this to someone superior to you (e.g. from a student to their teacher)?

We'd more frequently shorten it to "Can you (do something)?" or "Can you please (do something)?", because you're already asking them to do something so saying "can I ask you" is redundant.
"Can you please do the dishes?"
"Can you print out that report for me?"
