There is no difference in meaning.
In casual conversation, I expect that more people would say the first one.
In writing literature, the second one would probably be more common.
The first one sounds like simply reporting what happened.
The second one sounds more like putting a picture of what happened in the reader's mind.
That is only a small difference. They both describe exactly the same event.

I would say there is no preference for either over the other for either speaking or writing.
