Most of the time it’s “except for” and there’s no reason. We just like how it sounds.
“I like all cats except for my grandma’s. That cat’s evil.”
“I like all cats except my grandma’s. That cat’s evil.”
They’re both completely fine here, but most people will say the first one.
To contrast:
“All members need to pay their dues, except if you’re a veteran.”
“All members need to pay their dues, except for if you’re a veteran.”
The second one is kinda weird, too wordy since “if” is there. You just need more instinct telling the difference.
