He found them sitting down at a table to play chess – this is specifically saying, they were in the process of sitting down at the table in order to play.
Not the same meaning as the second one, which clearly states that they were already sitting, and already playing.

Not the same meaning as the second one, which clearly states that they were already sitting, and already playing.
