* Just a little elaboration
* From another answer (deleted for now)r:
지만 emphasizes the conflicting or opposing nature, whereas '는데' just refers to difference.
ex)
1.
그녀는 분명 아름다웠지만 나는 인정하지 않았다.
she was beautiful, but I denied it.
하지만 엄마, 이건 너무 많아요!
but mom, this is too much!
민호는 아버지에게 "우리 어디로 가는 거예요?" 라고 물었지만 그는 말없이 걷기만 했다.
Minho asked his father, " where are we going?", but he said nothing and just kept going.
그녀의 대답은 완벽하진 않았지만 그렇다고 완전히 틀린 것도 아니었다.
Her answer was not perfect, but it was not wrong totally.
그는 어제 전화를 어디에 두었는지 기억나지 않았다. 그는 집 전체를 확인했지만 그의 전화는 어디에도 없었다.
He couldn't remember where he put his phone. He checked every place in his house but his phone was in nowhere.
2.
네가 무슨말 하는지 아는데, 그래도 그건 아니야, 내 생각에는.
I understand what you mean, but it's still not a good choice, In my opinion.
너는 사과를 좋아하잖아, 아니야? 그런데 왜 내 포도를 먹어치운거야?
You like apple, aren't you? then why you ate up my grape?
나는 수영하는걸 좋아하는데 내 동생은 물을 무서워해요.
I love swimming, but my brother is afraid of water.
From my old answer:
There is a subtle difference of 'nuance'
1)
(front phrase) -는데 (rear phrase)
In order to ask / explain / suggest on rear phrase, gives some details on front phrase
eg) 전화를 못 받은 이유? 내기 목욕을 하고 있는데 전화가 왔잖아.
the reason I didn't get the phone? I was taking shower while the phone rang.
2)
(front phrase) -지만 (rear phrase)
while admitting (front phrase), 'by contrast' talk / explain/ suggest (rear phrase)
eg)
잘한 일지만 자랑할 것은 아니다.
That was a nice job, not something to be proud of.

@seiji_em You may say about '네가 무슨말 하는지 아는데, 그래도 그건 아니야, 내 생각에는.
'
That 하지만 is not a word. Instead, it's a conjugation of '하다 as 하다 -> 하는지
(e.g.)
그게 진짜인지 모르는데
맛이 이상한지 알고서
정말 하는지 모르는데도
