«По» придаёт незначительный оттенок продолжительности
Обычно мы используем «по» в таком случае, когда хотим показать то, что какое-то действие занимает много или мало времени в течении дня. Ещё «по» употребляется в этом смысле, когда что-то повторяется каждый промежуток времени:
Будет неправильно сказать: «сегодня я работал по 6 часов», но совершенно нормально «сегодня я работал 6 часов»
Нет особой разницы между « я работаю по 6 часов в день» и « я работаю 6 часов в день»
Ещё в некоторых случаях предлог «по» не нужен ( четкого правила об этом нет, просто надо запомнить)
У вас например написано «я пробегаю по 6 миль в день», нужно либо убрать «по» либо приставку «про-» у глагола

Я думаю, "пробегаю по 6 миль в день" неверно. Правильно будет "бегаю по 6 миль в день". Второе предложение верное.

Предлог «по» употребляется с числительными в форме винительного падежа в распределительном значении:
"Разложите денежные купюры по пять, десять и двадцать рублей".
"Для этой игры дети выстроились в круг по два человека"
"Набрав по тридцать очков, обе команды заняли третье место в турнирной таблице".
