Question about English (US)
Does "to go viral" only have to do with online/social media?
Let's say there's a couple at work and they didn't want to let anyone know they're going out. One day, a friend of theirs found out they're dating. She spread rumors so everybody at work knows it.
In this situation, can you say "It went viral." although she didn't post it on social media?

No it really only applies to online and social media contexts. Not really in person or interpersonal relationships.

Nope.
It's really just having to do with online/social media.... and we're talking widespread exposure here that you'd need something like the internet to make happen, not some workplace romance.

@debed@brendan7somm Does it suggest that you become "famous" online? Is it used in a positive way only?

@LeeKevin yea it suggests you become “famous” because you have a lot of views in a short amount of time. it’s a neutral term, neither positive nor negative. it depends on the context of why it went viral.

@LeeKevin Famous, yes. At least for a little while. It can be positive or negative.
If a clip of you saving a child from being run over by a bus 'goes viral' then it's good, right? Everyone sees you as a hero.
If a clip of you berating a waiter 'goes viral' then everyone hates you.
