Question about English (US)

This is a part of lyric;
All my life they told me
I would never succeed
Put me down, controlled me
Made me follow their lead
Bought the lies they sold me
For too long, I am finally free

1. I think "put me down" means "they silenced me," did I get that right?

2. I think "bought the lies they sold me" means "I knew they told me a lie, but I had to pretend I believe it," did I get that right?

Thank you in advance.
