When I do an English grammar workbook, there is something I cannot get. The question is below.

Complete the second sentence so that it means the same as the first.

The police thought my friend had stolen a car.
The police suspected _______________.

The answer is 'my friend of stealing a car', but my answer is 'my friend of having stolen a car'.
I cannot understand why my aswer is wrong, so could you please teach me why my answer is wrong?
