Yes, I went to a school where we didn't have to learn a foreign language. Which is not very helpful now!

In my school, it was obligatory to take 2 and Japanese was also an option

The options available will be dependent on the school itself. In my school personally, they only offer French and it is required for a few years until which afterwards, it is an option.
