Question about English (US)

I found some vocabulary that "chastise" is like punching someone by beating. If I say for example that "my mom chastised me when I broke our window" does this mean automatically that mom is hitting? Can this "chastise" mean only just verbal? Or how do you think when you heard someone has been chastised (hitted or not?)
