Time off is usually time that someone would normally be spending at an obligation, that is now free. For example, if I normally work Monday through Friday, but my boss says that I do not have to come in on a certain Monday, I have time off. For a while indicates that someone has time off for an extended period of time, but not usually too long. This is subjective.
