Alert (can be verbal) whereas "notify" means to give an alert in writing.

If you are alert, you are paying full attention to things around you and are able to deal with anything that might happen.

Ex:

If you notify someone of something, you officially inform them about it.
Ex:
1. The skipper notified the coastguard of the tragedy.
2. Earlier this year they were notified that their homes were to be cleared away.
