Question about English (US)

"When it was put to them in this light, they had no more to say." - Animal Farm

Is this "in this light" an idiom? I looked up but found no clue.
I'm guessing it means same as "from this perspective". Am I right?

How do you rephrase the sentence in other words?

Thanks!
