"an sich" bezieht sich auf die Eigenschaften einer Sache. Die Komplikationen entstehen meistens daraus, was diese Eigenschaften/Besonderheiten auslösen. (Welche Eigenschaften "kleben" AN der Sache dran?)
"für sich" geht von einer Situation aus, in der die Sache alleine steht und nicht von ihrer Umgebung/Umwelt beeinflusst wird. (Hier werden die Zusammenhänge zu anderen "Sachen" bewusst außer Acht gelassen.)
