In this example, most native speakers use the second one, but it doesnât matter if you use the first one because the meaning is still very clear.
Whenever you are not sure about how to phrase something, you can ask yourself this question â does it adequately convey the meaning, or does it make it confusing? This way, you are worrying less about what is supposed to be correct grammar, and concentrating more on clear communication.
There are many, many examples where you can say the same thing multiple different ways without interfering with the meaning.
I would prefer you to not leave the door open
I would prefer you not to leave the door open
I would prefer it if you didnât leave the door open
It would be better if you didnât leave the door open
Because there are so many ways to say this one simple thing, it indicates that it is quite difficult to get the meaning wrong. Therefore, you have many options.

@isthmus_x I still donât understand when to use ânot toâ and âto notâ in a sentence. For example, when A told B, âDonât leave the door open!â is it âA told B to not leave the door openâ or âA told B not to leave the door openâ?
