Someone said "what is your job" sounded like the police or agent at custom in the airport asked you.

I agree...What do you do for a living? Or just What do you do? is used rather than What is your job? in this context. Even for formal questioning, I think How are you employed? or What is your profession? is used. (Except perhaps customs agents talking to foreigners...)
What is your job? in colloquial English is more often used to ask what your assigned task is, rather than to ask about how you are employed.
For example,
The clients are coming in for the presentation today. I'm photocopying all the reports. What is your job? I'm setting up the conference room.
